Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) marks the day when:
Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas
He announced General Order No. 3
This enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas
Roughly 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were informed they were free
Importantly:
The Emancipation Proclamation had been issued in 1863
But it could not be effectively enforced in Confederate-controlled areas until Union forces arrived
So Juneteenth represents:
the last large-scale enforcement of emancipation in the United States
